On November 16, Multicap attended the press conference on which Brussels Regional Informatics Minister Guy Vanhengel launched a prestigious wireless project on the Brussels University Campus. Thanks to the Ministry's initiative, students and all other campus visitors enjoy the comfort of free wireless Internet access in the university park. Multicap and its partner Imtech Telecom were selected to provide the necessary infrastructure ensuring wireless coverage that would equal broadband wired internet connections. Moreover, the technology used had to support both WiMAX and Wi-Fi so that thorough testing could be done with free internal IP telephony for the university staff.
The fact that people are given wireless internet access is not very spectacular in itself. The revolutionary aspect to this project - and the main reason why the Imtech/Multicap solution has been selected - is the used Meru Networks technology. A central Meru Controllor manages the 78 installed Access Points in an intelligent way, thus balancing the network traffic. The installed network also supports the new Mesh technology, allowing Access Points to be installed in places - such as light poles - where there is no direct connection to the wired network. So far for the theory. The abovementioned press conference mainly consisted of a live demonstration of what the wireless Mesh network is capable of performed by Minister Vanhengel itself. Much to our deep satisfaction, the system proved to be working as described above.
