In cooperation with Multicap BVBA, your specialist in wireless data communication, the organisation of the famous Belgian walking event "Dodentocht" (the Journey of the Dead) again offers the possibility to follow-up on your beloved, brother, sister, greatgranddaughter or Border Collie online during their 100-km walk. For, on the occasion, a wireless network over UMTS is being set up between the 15 control posts along the track and the start/arrival in the town of Bornem.
In reality, that means that the badge of each of the expected 10.000 participants is scanned at each control post with a barcode scanner. The gathered data (passing times, etc.) are then transferred over the UMTS network from the control posts to the event's central server. The crucial factor in this enormous data transfer are the UMTS mobile PC cards (Sierra Wireless Aircard 850) that Multicap places at the organisation's disposal. Through the Dodensite website (www.dodentocht.be), the data gathered from all participants immediately become available online for the outside world. In addition, the participant him- or herself can thus afterwards review his passing times on his or her Dodentocht certificate!
