MeshMAX 3500Proxim MeshMAX™

Proxim’s MeshMAX™ product line integrates three technologies, WiMAX, Wi-Fi® Mesh and Wi-Fi, in one small unit!

MeshMAX is a tri-radio, outdoor device offering Wi-Fi connectivity for access, Wi-Fi mesh gateway for network redundancy and a high capacity, carrier-class WiMAX link for backhaul. The convergence of these three technologies in one unit delivers end-to-end QoS for triple-play applications, a reduction in total cost of ownership and investment protection for future developments in WiMAX!

At this point, two models are available in this product family: the 9100-EU and the 9101-EU. The main difference between these two tri-radio units is that the first supports Mesh networking, whilst the latter does not. It simply combines WiMAX (802.16d) with a dual-radio AP, being the classic AP-4000.

Possible implementation environments for this new product range

The most interesting and likely environments that the new MeshMAX™ products can be used in are MAN’s (Metropolitan Area Networks). With their rugged outdoor enclosure, these units are ideal to serve as subscriber units communicating with WiMAX base station units. Whereas the classic backhaul-providing Proxim Quickbridge 5054-R subscriber unit is typically installed in combination with a Mesh Access Point to provide local access to wireless clients, the MeshMAX units make that second unit obsolete. The Mesh AP is simply integrated into the MeshMAX unit!

In practice, the WiMAX subscriber unit radio will be involved in a point-to-point setup with a base station unit, whereas the two other radios in the unit are responsible for Mesh networking (i.e. where no direct network access can be realised due to various possible reasons) and the provision of local coverage.
