Wireless internet access on the VUB/ULB university

In the summer of 2006, the Ministry of the Brussels-Capital Region selected Multicap and its partner Imtech Telecom to provide wireless internet access on the VUB/ULB university campus in Brussels to whoever wants to make use of it. On behalf of the Ministry, the Brussels Regional Informatics Centre (BRIC) chose our solution based on the Meru Networks technology. A total of 90 Access Points have been installed to give broadband internet access to all interested students and other visitors to the campus site.

There were two major arguments in favour of Meru Networks™ revolutionary solution. On the one hand, the 100% reliable and secure system is managed centrally in an intelligent way through a Controller that is balancing the network traffic. The revolution also lies in the fact that all of the installed Access Points are functioning on one single channel without (negatively) affecting each other, which is a handy thing in an environment with over 40 neighbouring Access Points. On the other hand, this solution offers the possibility to deploy the largest Belgian Mesh network so far. Thanks to the new Mesh technology, it is possible to even install Access Points on places where they cannot be connected directly to the wired network. That connection with the Mesh Access Points is realised through the neighbouring Mesh Portal Access Point that has a direct connection to the wired network. Thus, the extreme high cost of cabling on impossible places can neatly be saved!
